NC Solar Center Testing Laboratory - Lab Manager (recently renamed the NC Clean Energy Technology Center)
In 2009 we undertook to build an ISO 17025 accredited testing laboratory at the NC Solar Center at NC State University.
Accreditation was awarded by A2LA and Solar Rating & Certification Corporation (SRCC), now lapsed.
The results of this testing are used for the certification and rating of solar thermal collectors by the SRCC.
This certification and rating is sought by manufacturers or their distributors, and provides a means of comparison to end users of these solar hot water heaters.
In the summer of 2013 we were audited for accreditation, which we received it in autumn.
We also provided custom thermal testing for industrial clients developing new systems.

A list of some my work while at the lab (assisted by students, volunteers, and grad students):
- Designed and constructed the collector performance testing stand.
- Designed and constructed the fluid flow system needed for testing.
- Designed & constructed equipment for custom thermal testing.
- Developed and performed custom solar thermal tests.
- Planned and implemented the process to obtain ISO 17025 accreditation.
- Developed software (LabVIEW) & hardware for measurement & control.
- Developed a calibration system for precision thermistors.
- Mentored students as they engaged in project work.
- Managed volunteers assisting with lab activities.
- Worked with clients to develop procedures for custom tests, run those test, analyze the results, and prepare test reports.
- Designed and constructed lab facilities such as safety rails, stairway, lightning protection, swept floors, whacked weeds, etc.
- Purchased lab and test materials, services, etc.
- Repaired and refurbished surplus equipment to outfit the lab.
